How to track pahermani without losing count

Pahermani is one of the most stressful moments of a Gujarati wedding: envelopes and clothing handed out to relatives at the mandap, often to a long line of people, while everyone is watching. Miss someone — or give twice — and it becomes a family talking point for years. Here’s how to keep it calm and accurate.

Prepare the list before the day

The mistake most families make is deciding who gets what on the spot. Instead, build the list in advance: every person, in the order they’ll be called, with the envelope amount and any clothing (kapdu, saree) noted against their name. On the day you’re just working down a prepared list.

Keep amounts off the live view

During the ceremony you don’t want rupee figures visible to the whole hall. Track only given / not given live — the amounts were decided during prep and the envelopes are already sealed. Keep the money detail private and reconcile it afterwards.

Plan for walk-ins

Someone always turns up who wasn’t on the list. Have a quick way to add a walk-in at the bottom without losing your place, so the main order stays intact.

Reconcile once it’s over

After the ceremony, check the count: how many given, how many not given, how many walk-ins — and only then look at the totals privately.
